Use of Chinese Visible Human Images to Enhance the Interpretation of CT or MRI Images: Application to Nasopharyngeal Structures Segmentation in the Treatment Planning System

Background: With leading morbidity among malignant tumors in otorhinolaryngology, Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most frequent China. Objectives: This study aimed to help radiotherapy doctors recognize and segment nasopharyngeal organs at risk NPC make a plan. Methods: The authors used B-spline mutual information transform, register, fuse Chinese Visible Human images with volunteer’s personalized computed tomography (CT) images, integrated them into Treatment Planning System (TPS). Consequently, Three-Dimensional Visualization (3DV+TPS) was created. To verify it, 3DV+TPS deployed identify NPC, questionnaire filled out by doctors. Results: Results showed that can finish registration fusion four sets sectional anatomical individual CT volunteers approximately 3 min 50 sec. Conclusion: registered fused accurately reflect position, outline, adjacent space structure which not clear images. Therefore, it helpful for recognizing segmenting neural, muscular, glandular structures. Through automatically registering fusing color gray improves accuracy efficiency structures making plans. It also useful improve teaching quality tumor medical students interns as well.
